Mariana Mae is an artist and visionary native to Coyoacan, DF, Mexico. Mariana offers her work under the wingspan of Easy To Breathe, locally in the Valley of Ojai, California. Since 2015, she’s shared her clay work, cultural, educational offerings and series of women’s workshops and ceremonial gatherings intimately and globally. Mariana’s work is anchored in the heart of expression, empowerment, ethnicity and ethics in our own creative understanding and acceptance of Self.

I think you’ll love Mariana’s way of gentleness, softness, and beauty in the world as she does big work in a radically different way than the mainstream.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Discerning between the external noise and your internal truth
  • The medicine of culture shock from moving internationally as a kid
  • Overcoming shyness and finding your voice through creative expression
  • How Mariana first found the magic of clay at age 7
  • Receiving the messages of the earth through the elements
  • Mariana’s creative process & overcoming attachment to outcomes
  • Co-creating with the divine, soil, fire, water, and air to create art and usable vessels of pottery
  • Growing up in a Catholic household and then leaving religion
  • Going back to the womb of the mother, listening to the elements, and being guided by elders in temazcal (sweatlodge)
  • Walking softly with beauty as a way of life
  • How her project documenting indigenous women and traditions around the world was born
  • Harvesting and processing clay in the traditional way in Morocco with an elder woman
  • How trusting her gut prepared her to document an unexpected indigenous potter in the Amazon
  • The reality of privilege in the western world
  • Finding stillness and re-evaluating what matters during this pandemic time
  • What’s going to happen after this, from the work that you’re doing now?
  • The responsibility of being obedient, even as a rebel soul
  • Being servants and supporters of each other and the earth
  • Communicating across languages using the sounds of how clay speaks
